Chief Editor
Dionne Fonoti is an anthropologist, educator and filmmaker based in Apia, Sāmoa. She was educated at the University of Hawaii at Manoa (BA), San Francisco State University (MA), and Victoria University of Wellington (PhD). She has taught at the National University of Sāmoa, under the Centre for Sāmoan Studies, for the past 14 years. Along with lecturing, Fonoti leads archaeological and cultural heritage projects across the Sāmoan islands, supporting CSS’ mandate as a leading force in research led by and for Sāmoans. Fonoti also manages the NUS Research Museum, Ofaga o Sa’ili’iliga, and, along with fellow CSS colleague, Dr. Brian Alofaituli, co-curated the inaugural exhibition, ATALILO: Motifs in Sāmoan Material CultureI, on display now. Outside of academia, Fonoti has worked in film and production for over 17 years on documentary, narrative, artistic and commercial projects in the US, New Zealand and Sāmoa. Her research interests are Sāmoan pre-history, archaeology, cultural heritage management, visual anthropology, Sāmoan and Pacific Islander representation in film and media, museums and material culture.
